Tank Testing

A tank test can provide valuable information about a tank’s present condition and is useful when a home is for sale. No test, however sophisticated, can predict the future. Tank Masters offers the Estabrook EZY 3 Locator Plus technology with a listening device, the best in the industry. This tool is third party evaluated and approved by the  U.S. EPA,  N.J. DEP,  N.Y. DEC,  PA. DEP.

All of Tank Masters technicians, led by Craig Monahan, are certified in the use of the EZY 3 Locator Plus. The Locator Plus is the safest and least intrusive ways to test an underground tank and all of its piping with instant results. Tank Masters also does soil sampling, but soil sampling can be inconclusive. At best you can only sample along the sides of the tank. The majority of corrosion and leaks start from the inside and begin at the bottom channel of the tank where condensation and interior tank water collects. Sometimes you can actually sample around the parameter of the tank and have clean samples but still have an environmental impact. If the integrity of the tank is what you are testing for, then test the Tank.   (not the soil)

The state of the art analog equipment used by Tank Masters is regularly evaluated by the National Work Group on Leak Detection Evaluations (NWGLDE) as well as by a third party evaluator. Tank Masters equipment is certified to test tanks up to 30,000 gallons (digital testing equipment is not). Furthermore, many states have not yet certified the digital testing methods. In fact, the majority of testing companies prefer to use the analog method because of the accuracy and dependability of the results. Tank Master’s test can detect and locate air leaks within three minutes. Unlike our competitor’s equipment, exterior temperature and interior tank vapor pockets do not affect our tests. Tank Masters can test your underground tank in various weather conditions, whether your tank is completely empty or up to 99% full. The equipment used by Tank Masters is the Estabrook EZY 3 Locator Plus tank testing system. Due to the large demand in today’s market, tank testing is becoming a necessity.

The EZY 3 Locator Plus consists of a microphone placed in the ullage portion of the underground tank. The microphone is connected to an acoustic signal processor and to a head set enabling the technician to listen to the acoustic sounds in the tank. Using the motor / blower assembly a slight vacuum is applied to the tank system, air will be drawn into the tank if a leak exists.

Acoustic Signal Processor, Microphone & Headset

The frequency response curve of this instrumentation allows it to discriminate easily between bubbles, leaks, leak types, and mechanical vibration. This equipment gives true “live” sound, which is easily recognizable for the technician.

The EZY 3 Locator Plus tests the entire tank system, including the product lines. When testing, the tank can be empty to 99% full. A blower is used to reduce the positive pressure inside the tank and bring it below atmospheric pressure. This is usually referred to as a vacuum test, not a pressure test. If a tank system leaks and the leaks are above the liquid level, air will intrude into the tank, which causes a hissing sound, this will fail the tank system test. If a tank system leaks and the leaks are below the liquid level this will cause a bubbling or gurgling sound, which will also result in a tank system failure. The technician can distinguish between the different sounds and can determine immediately whether the leak is in the ullage (dry) or the wetted portion of the tank, if a leak exists.

The EZY 3 Locator Plus is third party certified and approved by the U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY, NEW YORK DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION, NEW JERSEY DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION and PENNSYLVAINIA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION as an underground storage tank tightness testing method.

Our Certification

Tank Masters Inc. certifies that the underground storage tank and product distribution lines listed in the above table have been tested by means of the EZY 3 Locator Plus test system, which meets or exceeds the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) accuracy requirements for tank testing.  These requirements are specified in the U.S. EPA protocol 40 CFR Part 280, Subpart D entitled “Standard Test Procedure for Evaluating Leak Detection Methods:  Nonvolumetric Tank Tightness Tank Testing Methods”, EPA/530/UST-005 and Section 6.3.1 “Application of Protocol to Acoustical Methods”.  According to these regulations, leak detection systems must be capable of detecting leaks of 0.1 gallons per hour with a probability of detection of 0.95 and probability of false alarm of 0.05.
